Volunteer Opportunities

For 128 years, volunteers have touched the lives of the residents of Covenant Woods and its predecessor, The Richmond Home for Ladies. Volunteers lead creative arts classes, present educational programs, participate in worship services, provide musical programs and offer friendly visits. Over 200 volunteers from Methodist and Presbyterian churches, area schools, the Covenant Woods community and the Greater Richmond community support the programs and activities of Covenant Woods.

We have volunteer opportunities in the following areas:
  • Friendly visitor: Visit with selected residents.
  • Pet Visits: Pet owners can bring their pet in and visit with selected residents. If you are interested in bringing in your pet, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator to go over Pet Guidelines.
  • Covenant Crafter: Work with a resident or a group of residents to stimulate their creativity. Examples include hand pottery, watercolor, knitting, etc. Supplies will be provided.
  • Musical Volunteers: Serve as a musical volunteer regardless of your degree of talent or ability to play an instrument. Examples include sing-alongs, instruments, listening to prerecorded music, etc.
  • Games: Play games with a resident or a group of residents. Examples include checkers, cards, chess, Wii, etc.
  • Cooking Group: Are you a top chef? Always wanted to host your own cooking show? Well, consider leading a cooking group from start to finish. Supplies will be provided.
  • Social Hostess: Do you like to throw parties? Host a social for our residents. Speak with the Volunteer Coordinator about what type of food/drinks you would like to serve and with which residents you want to work. Supplies can be provided.
  • Teaching or Presenting: Whether you are interested in teaching a class on technology or ballroom dancing, giving a presentation on geography or a drama production, we’d love to have you out.
  • Internships & Student Field Work: If you would like to gain experience in your field of study, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator.

To offer our volunteers a great experience, we regularly hold orientations to familiarize our volunteers with Covenant Woods. For more information, please contact Courtney Starzer at Courtney.Starzer@covenantwoods.com or 804.569.8155.

The Guild of Covenant Woods

The Guild is a volunteer group committed to promoting the happiness, comfort and welfare of Covenant Woods’ Manor East residents, which includes Assisted Living and Grace Gardens Memory Support. They visit residents, sponsor special monthly programs, run The Ruth Shoppe and assist with seasonal activities. The membership primarily consists of representatives from the United Methodist and Presbyterian churches in the Richmond metropolitan area, but all denominations are welcome.

The Guild meets the first Monday of every month at 10:30 a.m. at Covenant Woods. We’ve had the same meeting time for 126 years; please consider joining us! For more information, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator.
