Java Group Program: Empowering residents to help each other

The Java Group Program is a research-based, group activity initiative for older adults that’s designed to bring people together, help end loneliness, and spread happiness. Based on the altruistic concept that people are happiest when they’re helping one another, Java is about sharing vulnerabilities and strengths, and finding value in giving and receiving help. Unlike typical recreation programs, the focus is on peer support — residents helping residents — which adds meaning and purpose to their lives.

Java uses themes, photography, music, readings, and a “talking stick” to foster peer-to-peer interaction. Its methods have been shown to induce a high rate of participation. We can attest to that here at Covenant Woods as we see the smiles on the faces of residents as they engage with each other.
